Creating a Modern Outdoor Room

The Opportunity

This mid-century property in Tempe had a solid architectural foundation but the outdoor spaces were underutilized and lacked cohesion. The existing yard offered little structure, limited entertaining space, and minimal connection to the home itself.

The goal was to transform the landscape into a functional extension of the house while introducing strong geometric elements that complement the clean lines of mid-century design and maximize the space.

Design Vision

The landscape was designed to balance modern geometry with desert simplicity. Circular concrete elements, structured plantings, and layered outdoor spaces were introduced to create visual rhythm and usable zones throughout the property.

The design also focused on creating an outdoor environment suited for everyday living and entertaining, incorporating shaded areas, gathering spaces, and wellness features.

Landscape Transformation

The entire yard was reimagined with a new layout and material palette that complements the home’s architecture.

Concrete circle pads were installed to introduce sculptural geometry and guide movement through the yard. Gravel and turf areas were layered to provide contrast while maintaining a clean, low-maintenance desert landscape.

A custom pergola structure was added to create shaded outdoor seating space, while a built-in barbecue area anchors the corner of the yard next to the palm planter. A dry sauna was incorporated to add a wellness component to the outdoor environment.

New drip irrigation, landscape lighting, and carefully selected desert plantings were installed throughout the property to create depth, privacy and nighttime ambiance.

Ficus trees and palm plantings were positioned to frame views, soften hardscape edges, and bring scale to the yard.

The Result

The redesigned landscape transforms the property into a cohesive outdoor environment that complements the mid-century architecture of the home.

Strong geometric elements, thoughtful plantings, and functional outdoor spaces create a backyard that feels intentional, modern, and livable year-round in the desert climate.

What was once an underutilized yard now functions as an extension of the home, designed for entertaining, relaxation, and everyday outdoor living.

Strong geometry, layered planting, and functional outdoor spaces turn a simple backyard into a modern place to live.
