Moon Valley Landscape Design | Phoenix

Location: Phoenix, Arizona     Year Built: 1965

The Property

The backyard of this Moon Valley home was largely unfinished when the project began. The space consisted primarily of dirt with minimal planting and little design structure to define the outdoor environment.

The existing pool was functional, but the surrounding decking and landscape did not provide the visual character or usable outdoor living space the property needed.

Design Vision

The goal of the project was to transform the backyard into a finished landscape that felt intentional and balanced with the home and pool.

The design introduced color, structure, and privacy while maintaining a clean desert landscape approach. Geometric elements were incorporated to give the yard a stronger visual identity while keeping the layout simple and functional.

Landscape Transformation

The project began with the removal and replacement of the existing pool decking to establish a clean foundation for the new landscape.

Geometric concrete and turf circles were introduced on both sides of the pool, creating a mirrored pattern that gives the yard a strong visual rhythm while softening the surrounding hardscape.

The turf areas were carefully designed to use the available space efficiently while maintaining open areas for lounging and recreation around the pool.

Plantings were added throughout the yard to introduce color and texture that had previously been absent from the landscape.

Along the rear property line, a ficus hedge was installed to create a living privacy screen. Once matured and trimmed to the desired height, the hedge provides privacy from the golf course behind the property while maintaining a clean and natural edge to the landscape.

The Result

What was once a raw and unfinished backyard is now a structured outdoor environment designed for both relaxation and entertaining.

The combination of geometric turf circles, updated pool decking, new plantings, and the ficus privacy hedge gives the space a balanced and finished character that complements the property while making the backyard far more usable.
