Reimagining an Aging Scottsdale Ranch House for Modern Desert Living
Design Vision
The goal of the Catalina project was a complete transformation of an aging property into a modern desert home with stronger architectural presence and improved functionality.
The existing house required a full renovation, including updated infrastructure, improved ceiling heights, and a reconfigured layout. The design focused on introducing larger glass openings, cleaner lines, and stronger indoor-outdoor connections while bringing the home up to modern construction standards.
Exterior improvements, including new landscaping, privacy walls, and a swimming pool, were incorporated to create a cohesive backyard environment that complements the architecture.
Structural Renovation & Addition
This project involved a full renovation of the home along with a significant addition and infrastructure upgrades.
The floor plan was modified to improve circulation and create a more functional layout. A new primary suite addition was constructed, providing expanded living space along with a private bathroom and closet.
Ceiling heights throughout the home were raised to 9 feet, creating a more open interior environment. Large commercial-grade floor-to-ceiling glass panels were introduced to bring natural light into the living spaces and strengthen the connection between the interior and backyard.
A new two-car garage was also added to improve storage and functionality.
Infrastructure & Exterior Improvements
In addition to the architectural changes, the home received a complete systems upgrade.
All electrical wiring and plumbing systems were replaced, and the structure was upgraded with foam insulation and a new roof. New flooring, interior finishes, paint, and fixtures were installed throughout the home.
A breeze block feature wall was incorporated as an architectural element that references classic mid-century design language.
The exterior of the property was further improved with new landscaping, a swimming pool, and the construction of an 8-foot block wall along the alley, providing privacy and enclosure for the backyard.
The Result
The Catalina renovation transforms the property into a fully modernized home with improved architecture, infrastructure, and outdoor living space.
With a new primary suite, higher ceilings, floor-to-ceiling glass, and a redesigned backyard with a pool and landscaping, the project creates a home that combines modern construction with mid-century inspired design elements.
